Did you know there is a secret beach on Table Mountain?
Secret beach on Table Mountain – When one hears the word beach, they think of the ocean. But did you know that there is a beach on top of the world renowned Table Mountain? It is called Skeleton Gorge Beach.
To reach the beach, hikers must traverse through Skeleton Gorge which begins in the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and leads up to the shaded, indigenous forest on the eastern side of Table Mountain. It culminates at Maclear’s Beacon, with light non-exposed scrambling as well as offering a jungle setting and inland views on the ascent.
Upon reaching Breakfast Rock, take the right path ahead and in just a few minutes hikers will find themselves walking in ankle-deep sand. Ahead, lies a beautiful white beach which leads into the water of the Hely-Hutchinson dam.
The Hely-Hutchinson dam is one of the five dams on Table Mountain and was built to supply Cape Town with water, being completed in 1904. It can hold 920 000 square meters of water and was named after the governor Walter Hely-Hutchinson.
The Skeleton Gorge Beach is an inadvertently man-made phenomenon which is caused by wind and water weathering around the dam. Its picturesque view, peaceful atmosphere and tranquil scenery make it a perfect spot for a snack or lunch stop after hiking up Table Mountain.
This strange, yet beautiful beach adds to the many reasons why Table Mountain is worth the hike.
