18 November 2022 – Compagniesdrift Albertus pays tribute to mentors

Compagniesdrift Wines Stellenbosch has released their newest natural sweet wine, the Compagniesdrift Albertus. This special launch event paid homage to two important mentors, Albertus Nicolaas de Waal (Albie) and Johann Albert Reinecke Myburgh (Hannes), who have contributed significantly to the company’s success.

Ilse Ruthford, Managing Director of Compagniesdrift, explains that naming the wine after these mentors was a fitting way to thank them for their guidance and support. The name Albertus is associated with strong planning ability, boldness, independence and a passion for justice – all qualities Albie de Waal and Hannes Myburgh have exhibited throughout their involvement in Compagniesdrift.

The Albertus was produced in late-harvest style, aged for 14 months, and blended from different vintages of Muscat grapes. On the nose it has aromas reminiscent of Turkish delight, rosewater, fresh ginger, apricot, citrus, and marmalade. The palate features a delightful balance of acidity and fruit sweetness, with a subtle tannin structure from its time in the barrel. And it ends with a pleasing grapefruit aroma that lingers on the tongue.

Compagniesdrift Albertus is perfect for special occasions or to go along with cheese. It makes an ideal gift for someone special in your life. Show them you appreciate them like Albertus and Hannes have been appreciated with this one-of-a-kind wine!

About Compagniesdrift

Compagniesdrift  is a wine producer and storage facility in South Africa that began with just four producers. Today, Compagniesdrift has over 50 wine producers who trust the facility to store their wines – totalling 2.5 million bottles!

Compagniesdrift Wines were launched in 2015 by workers with ties to several wine properties in Stellenbosch, including Meerlust, Vriesenhof and Ken Foresterr.

The Compagniesdrift range of quality wines are made by renowned winemaker Altus Treurnicht. The company  prides itself in taking good care of its workers and their families, providing them with a strong sense of family and belonging while also investing in their personal and career growth through training and development programmes.

The Myburgh Family Trust, owners of the renowned Meerlust Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, was instrumental in setting up Compagniesdrift Wines with the aim of providing meaningful and economically viable empowerment to their workers. Since July 2019, Compagniesdrift has been owned by the Meerlust Workers’ Trust. Its establishment was made possible through a collaboration between the Myburgh Family Trust, Standard Bank and the Department of Land Affairs’ Land Reform and Development programme. The 72 beneficiaries have long-standing connections with Meerlust, Vriesenhof and Ken Forrester wineries.
