Places where you can see Whales in the Western Cape


Hermanus, also known as the whale-watching capital. It is possible to watch whales from the shore in Hermanus. Within this small coastal town lies Walker Bay, just a few hours southeast of Cape Town, and is famous for being one of the best places in the world for whale watching.

False Bay is the best spot near Cape Town for whale watching. Opt for the higher vantage points along the False Bay shoreline such as Cape Point, Clarence Drive between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els and Boyes Drive between St James and Kalk Bay. The nearby De Hoop Nature Reserve is a protected area for southern right whales, and you can often spot these gentle giants from the shores of the reserve.
