Leon Schuster’s movie, ‘You Must Be Joking’, is a classic South African comedy that has been around for decades. It follows the mischievous antics of Leon Schuster, a prankster who uses candid camera and elaborate disguises to stitch up unsuspecting members of the public.
One of the most iconic scenes from this movie is the watermelon pulse test. In this scene, Leon pretends to be a fruit expert in order to buy some ripe watermelons from a seller. He then proceeds to take a wacky watermelon ‘pulse’ test by pressing it against his ear and listening for its heartbeat. After much confusion, Leon reveals that he was simply testing to see if the watermelon was ripe, as a ripe watermelon should not have a heartbeat!
Another famous sketch from this movie is when Leon cooks an omelette on the bonnet of his car in the middle of traffic, much to the bafflement of a nearby police officer. And let’s not forget about the time he pretended to kill a cow in the butcher’s shop, sending the shopkeeper into a frenzy.
